Toward this end, several lines of evidence indicate that physician-scientists remain an integral component of biomedical research in general and clinical translation in particular.

Once properly trained, they are particularly well-suited to conduct the "bench to bedside" and "bedside to bench" translational cancer research essential for improving patient care. Conversely, physician-scientists are not easily replaced by either basic or industry-based investigators.
